It finally came! Yay. I won’t talk a lot. Here are pictures. (Also- if anyone needs/wants measurements of anything just ask and I’ll try to compile them).

So everything is in Japanese. This should be fun.

I also couldn’t really tell what these warnings are. I assume: Pac*Man is sad- do not feed him, Do not play with Flame-Children, and even baby frankenstein has parent.

The plus side of having to construct the model is that I could easily take measurements

Just making sure that Ripley actually was the correct height. 6×12=72 which is 6 feet… PERFECT. I was excited. Also side note:

I usually like to use metric for anything because it makes far more sense, HOWEVER, when I was making mey small-scale PWL last year, I found that when I went to hardware stores I had to do a bunch of last minute conversions for the employees (totally not their fault) but I figured since I can do both and live in Amurica I’ll just use inches from the beginning.

Sorry about the bloody finger… I slipped a little with the craft knife so I just slathered on some super-glue and it wasn’t the prettiest fix. 2013-01-22 17.52.15 2013-01-22 20.39.02 2013-01-22 21.21.43 2013-01-23 11.00.00 2013-01-23 11.00.08

I didn’t actually glue the cage onto the front of the power loader or add the cables or stickers yet. I figured it would be easier to measure AND I want to paint Ripley and put her into the cage.

How I Spend My Saturday Nights….

I am super disappointed my Power Loader didn’t come today. Apparently if Fed Ex loses your tracking number they can’t look up the tracking number without the tracking number (…yeah… stupid). So they had to contact RoboToys and get the tracking number and now it won’t be here until AT LEAST Tuesday. So I spending my Saturday at home with the flu, my awesome roommate, re-runs of LOST, my crazy critters, and lots and lots of hot-glue.

I will proceed with the M41-A Pulse Rifle.

Here is how I spend my awesome Saturday.

2013-01-17 20.05.33This is my cat, Boomer

2013-01-17 22.58.03This is Chuckles (the Cat) and Butter Bean (the lab) Trying to make me feel better with their evil devil-eye powers.

2013-01-19 22.25.51All I have accomplished with the Pulse. If I wasn’t so damn sick and could breathe easier than perhaps I would have more done. But excuses are excuses.

Also, sorry about the cat food in the last picture. Maybe one day I’ll get a real desk or work bench and then I won’t have to craft on the kitchen table.

Anyway. I hope everyone else has an awesome Saturday doing awesome things. I’ll continue updating this blog mostly because it give me something to do.

More Shoes! (Gosh you’d think I was writing some sort of fashion-blog)

OK, so after some more research… including this girl’s AWESOME Ripley costume including kick-ass footware: LINK-TO-SWEET-ASS-COSTUME For serious though… check out this costume it’s awesome.

I went to the Reebok site and lo and behold they also allow you to make custom footwear. I designed two:

There are some subtle differences. I think i’m going with the second. They are both around $110. I will order when I have money. Hopefully before dragoncon.

Thoughts? Concerns?

Oh. Here are the actually shoe incase you don’t feel like looking back two posts.

Peace… Through Superior Firepower

I’m so excited for my Power Loader Model. But now I feel like i’m just sitting around twiddling my fingers so I have decided to fill those hours with making a M41A Pulse Rifle. I decided this will come in handy if I just want to stroll around as Ripley without the suit (I imagine it’ll be hard to walk and heavy after awhile and i’ll want a reprieve).

I will post pictures once I have pictures to post. So far I just have some shitty computer designs and a couple pieces of card-stock. But for the few people who may be reading my blog- or may be reading it in the future. Just keeping everyone up to date.

A long, picture-heavy, post about sneakers!

I really want this power loader to be the best, most realistic, WALKABLE, powerloader to date and sometimes this leads to me getting a little over-obsessed with details. Case and point: The sneakers.

In Aliens Ripley wears these super kick-ass Reeboks. Here’s a shot from the Promo-Poster and from the HotToys 1/6th model:

I did some more research and I thought “Well hot-damn, they actually make these shoes!” And in fact the DO! The Reebok AlienStomper2. Very similar as you can see:

But I ran into a major issue. They only make the shoe in friggin’ BLUE now. Take  a looksy:

Sure there were a few authentic ones out there (For nearly $500 and in size US 6.5…i’m a 12 and my budget is about $100 for shoes)

So I started to look at other velco high-tops and none were satisfying. I even played with Convers’ Make-Your-Own shoe thingy-ma-jig and STILL wasn’t happy (even with my own Ripley branding)

Basically the jury is still out on the shoes. No matter what i’ll have to do some modifying when they get here but for now I send it out into the great inter-webs to perhaps get some feedback.

(as you can see it is 2 am -I work at 8- and this has been plaguing me and preventing sleep since around 10)

Oh to bite the bullet.

So I’ve been slightly reluctant to start up the bulk of my power-loader for a few reasons. One, I’m having some scaling issues. I printed out pictures of the powerloader, models of the power loader, Weaver, etc… and measured and re-measured and still somethings just are…off.

With the flamethrower it wasn’t as big of a deal but with the actual suit it’ll be a problem for a few reasons. I’ll be two feet off the ground and already being 6 feet I really don’t want to take a tumble because I miscalculated weight-proportions. Secondly, it’ll be a pain in the ass to have re-do a part or a significant part due to miscalculations in measurements.

So I think the time has come for me to buy a model. There are only two good models out there. One is about 1000USD and the other one about 80USD. The first one, made by Hot Toys, is superior and huge: a 1/6th scale. But I think i’ll go with the cheaper one. It’s made by Aoshima of Japan and on Amazon it’s $70 + 20 shipping (maybe I can find it cheaper or wait until my birthday).

So, once more, everything is on hold. I’ll order when I can. It may be a while so don’t expect a shit ton of posts until then.

Step 1: Scaling and a Work-In-Progress Flame Thrower

So it has been four days since I last updated. Here is what I have done:

I knew the very first thing I would have to do is scale everything to be real-life. Unfortunately, the best model out there is made by Hot Toyz and currently runs as a “collector’s item” for about $700-1000. Having little pocket-change I ended up using a bunch of pictures of the model, from the movie, and other sources. I then printed them out, and then did some math:

Since Sigourney Weaver and I are the same height I used the model that came with the power loader to judge sizing. I then had to decide where to start. I decided to start with the Power Loader’s flame thrower.  It’s a small piece and one I knew I wanted to have.

First things first- I made a model of the flame thrower in Blender:

As you can see I used a reference picture of the flame thrower that someone had modified from the Hot Toyz model.

I then added some details:

And I felt pretty good about my model. I knew I wanted to export it to Pepakura BUT using the cylindrical details and small-bits would leave me with something like 28,000 faces and I would be unable to assemble. So I actually reverted and simplified. I would have to sculpt on the details either using Bondo or some other medium later: The large cylinder on the bottom I removed I would make using a paper towel tube.

From there I put it into Pep and printed out, folded, assembled:

After I was finished, I remeasured and realized that the thing was, unfortunately 9 inches off (too small). I apparently should not try to convert 28 inches to mm in my head- I put in 511 instead of 558.8.

This isn’t the end of the world however as I will use this model to mess around with and try to get it right the next time and in the future.

Dragon*Con 2012

Dragon*Con, by its own definition, is:

The largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe!

I attended Dragon*Con this past labor day weekend, thursday through monday, as a last minute whim. With less than a week to think up a Cosplay Costume I decided to go as the Powerloader (or Power Loader) from Aliens. I found some great instructables on the interwebs from these fine folks:

The first one I found was this:

This one was slightly scaled down but they did an awesome job.

The second one I found was this:

Which is full-sized and even more awesome.

It was clear that I could not do either of these in two days. I found a few others costumes on line for “easier” versions and I will compile them here:

I ended up putting together something in about 10 hours (including hot-gluing and painting in the hotel room the night before) in pictures it looks alright. Here I am:

Overall I was actually surprised that my “shitty” costume gathered so much attention. Being made out of foamcore board (something both the first two instructables used) it was lightweight but still impressive. For a halloween costume that would have been awesome. However, Dragon*Con is a whole-other-ball-of-wax and the HUNDREDS of people wanting to stop, take a picture, grab onto a gripper, or shout “Get Away From Her You Bitch!” and High-Five a robotic arm put a lot of strain on the hot-glue and tape construction I relied on. After the second night my power loader looked like this:

Not quite wearable. I had a lot of fun running around and taking pictures so now I have 365…no… 364 days to make the best, full-sized, partially functional power loader out there. I will start by trying to acquire a to-scale replica and go from there. Sigourney Weaver and I are both 6’0 so I can keep everything exactly like the model. My friend told me to keep a blog. So I will.

I should mention: This first Power Loader was my VERY FIRST try at any kind of costuming or cosplay. So this will be my second shot. I realize that I am a straight-nOOb when it comes to everything so I may be doing things “wrong” or less efficiently than I should but it’s a learning experience for me. Feel free to make comments and suggestions. I’m willing to learn.  My only experience with crafting besides this first power-loader was making giant puppets and marionettes in High School.
